5 Times the K-drama Series called Goblin Reminded Me of Sarah J. Maas's ACOTAR. K-drama x YOung Adult book? Why not??

5 Times the K-drama Series called Goblin Reminded Me of Sarah J. Maas’s ACOTAR

Hi, guys. I hope all is well wherever you are! I am back again with a television x bookish discussion! Well, this one is somewhat different from my other posts and I have obviously never done something like this before. Haha. So last week, I finished watching the super famous Korean drama series, Goblin: the Lonely and Great God. While watching it, some scenes in the said series reminded me of one of my favorite Sarah J. Maas’s books ever: A Court of Thorns and Roses. And I am sooo freaking out. Help!

YOU!

STOP RIGHT THERE

if you haven’t watched the K-drama series or read the book yet because… Spoilers!

You guys, I tried to be silent about this one for like 5 days but I can’t. I just can’t. I just can’t keep quiet about the things I care about so I decided to let it all out here. Hehe.

It’s not a secret that I love Sarah J. Maas and her books so much. My friend introduced her books to me and we both met her last year and fell in love on the spot! Ugh! A Court of Thorns and Roses is the first SJM book I finished reading and it’s been a year already but I have never really gotten over it– yet! Just imagine all the trauma feels she gave me.

The scenes, the feels and everything I can possibly remember from that book are best kept in the innermost part of my brain waiting to resurface. And when it did, when I watched that dang K-drama series, my brain scattered all over the place like a gross spilled pink Slurpee that nobody bothers to mop. I was not ready for the blow at all!

To be honest, I don’t really watch k-drama series before– and I have only watched like four k-drama series in my entire life– because let’s get this straight: I simply am not a fan. Okay. I was not a fan because Goblin changed that!

Goblin and A Court of Thorns and Roses (ACOTAR) are two totally different things. But when I think about it, they go so well like… Idk. (I’m obviously not so good with analogies so whatever.) Hehe. Okay, let’s start now.

5 Times the K-drama Series, Goblin Reminded Me of Sarah J. Maas’s ACOTAR

1. WHEN IT CAME TO MY SENSES THAT THE MOST IMPORTANT BOYS (Kim Shin and Tamlin) IN BOTH STORIES ARE SIMILAR IN SO MANY ASPECTS

a. They are both warriors

Almost a thousand years ago, before Kim Shin was blessed and cursed with immortality, he was a warrior who gave his best to protect his traitor: the King.

Meanwhile, Tamlin, a strong and quiet “person” believes he is only good at war and killing people.

b. Their age

Kim Shin is 939 years old while Tamlin has also been living for hundreds of years. Also, they are both tall, rich and perfect. (Tamlin became annoying in the second book though. Yikes!)

c. They are both divinities or gods (but overall, Kim Shin is a better man) Hehe.

Kim Shin (aka Goblin) saved both Ji Eun Tak (the Goblin’s bride) and her mother’s life from death by a car accident when the dying pregnant lady called for a divinity’s help.

In ACOTAR, Tamlin, the High Lord of the Spring Court and Feyre’s first love interest, is also a divinity!

Ji Eun Tak’s mother’s first dying/death scene has finally convinced me that ACOTAR’s undoubtedly haunting me while I’m watching the drama series… And I’m not complaining!

2. WHENEVER GOBLIN’S BEAUTIFUL, HUGE, AND NOT-SO HUMBLE FAIRY TALE-LIKE ABODE APPEARS ON SCREEN

Kim Shin's Mansion #Goblin

Eun Tak entered Kim Shin's (aka Goblin) mansion for the first time. This scene gave me huge #ACOTAR or A Court of Thornes and Roses feels!

Seeing Goblin’s mansion on screen gave me some ~serious~ ACOTAR feels. I seriously can’t help but think of Tamlin’s (ACOTAR) castle whenever Kim Shin’s (Goblin) mansion is on display and I freak out every. single. time.

3. WHEN GOBLIN AND GRIM REAPER’S FRIENDSHIP BECAME A THING

Attention ACOTAR Lovers: Two super handsome almost immortal creatures? Sounds familiar right? Grim Reaper (Kim Woo Bin/Wang Yeo) and Goblin (Kim Shin)’s bromance reminded me of Lucien and Tamlin’s um… bromance. Uggghhhh!

Grim Reaper and Goblin's bromance. My favorite thing on earth!

My head rang every bell it has when Goblin and Grim Reaper became officially friends the moment they realized their feud in the past is not so important anymore. I love them so much omg!

I know, they are not friends here yet but I like this scene very much and look at their cool angry faces!!!

Okay I need to stop. Next!

4. GRIM REAPER DIDN’T FALL IN LOVE WITH EUN TAK JUST LIKE LUCIEN DIDN’T FALL FOR FEYRE!

Respect your bro’s love life, bro. Know your limits. You know, bro-code. Duh.

I love this very thing about the drama’s romance bit. I love how Grim Reaper didn’t fall in love with Eun Tak despite her irresistible smile (and vice-versa). I love how Grim Reaper is in love with somebody else too! Who needs another love triangle though? NOT ME.

Look how cute Goblin, Eun Tak and Grim Reaper are together; no problems, no love triangles, no betrayals. *Sigh* I’m not crying. You are! (Okay, maybe I am too.)

5. WHEN EUN TAK RETURNED TO GOBLIN (KIM SHIN) AFTER “WHAT HAPPENED”

Goblin K-drama ending Gif

Remember when Feyre returned to Tamlin after “what happened” too? Yeah, that’s what I am talking about. The feels! Update: I’m still crying.

There you go. Both ACOTAR and Goblin’s endings are paralyzing yet beautiful. I have not read A Court of Mist and Fury (ACOMAF), the sequel to ACOTAR yet because I can not move on. I seriously can’t and I already tried. Lol.

After watching Goblin, I have no idea what to watch next and I’m afraid the next one won’t and can’t match all the feels I felt while watching this series.*sighh*

I’m really glad I came across these two. Goblin and ACOTAR are still so different in terms of the actual plot, setting and many others but finding ACOTAR again in a place where I never thought would make me feel right at home.

I was in a state of severe book slump too when I watched Goblin but I feel like I’ve won my week still because it reminded me of one of my ultimate books ever when I can’t even read a single thing. Sounds about right!

  1. WOW! I LOVED THIS POST! SO TRUE, EVERY WORD! lol, they are amaaaazingly similar! I just finished ACOTAR and haven’t even written my review yet… I loved how you related the Goblin house to Tamlin’s estate.., while etc are different in so many ways they both give that majestic, lux feel!

Since you loved Goblin… you may love The Bride of the Water God. It’s modern times, about a God and is so cute! I’ve only watched 6 episodes and there is another chaebol on the scene too (love triangle – not sure yet and I hope not!?) but it is in a similar vein to Goblin… have you thought about watching that one?

Gahh! I’m so glad you found myog so I could find yours! I look forward to more posts like this 😁
